Sound Design for Games

November 19, 2023

Thank you for visiting my website and showing interest in the sound designing projects I have completed as I continue on my journey at Full Sail University. These projects are a showcase of the talent and skills obtained through the invaluable support from the exceptional faculty members. Your visit holds great significance for me, and I hope you find this website both engaging and inspiring.

In Project & Portfolio II I completed this demo reel to showcase my implementation of the various sound designing concepts for various video game levels. Sound design in video games involves creating and implementing audio elements to enhance the gaming experience, including music, sound effects, dialogues, ambience, and spatial audio. The goal is to immerse players, evoke emotions, provide feedback, and enhance gameplay. Key components include ambient sound, sound effects, music, dialogue, interactive sound, and spatial audio. Gaming sound design is accomplished with the use of software tools, libraries, and equipment to create and implement audio assets, aiming to enhance storytelling, gameplay, and player engagement.

In the Sound Design Demo Reel you will see various game levels showcasing different gaming elements with audio I created and implemented. The Game Object sound design was created with the idea of the player picking up this object to receive a Health PowerUp. The Intractable sound design was created to give audio to the clicking of a button and motion of a lever, both actions resulting in a light being turned on from this trigger. The Environmental sound design was created to give the player the immersive feeling of being right next to flowing lava. The Complex sound design was created to give audio to multiple moving elements making up a singular object: Blackhole surrounded by dust that is absorbing nearby dust particles. The Projectile Weapon sound design was created to give audio to the glowing ball of energy that projects a spherical blast when triggered.

I was able to accomplish the sound designs with the use of various tools and techniques taught throughout Project & Portfolio II and the previous courses I have completed so far at Full Sail. The first step I took in my process for sound design was to discover the appropriate sources for the project. This would involve sifting through sound libraries, creating sounds with virtual instruments using synthesizers, samplers, presets, and other various MIDI softwares/hardwares, or recording my own live audio. When recording was needed to create assets, minimizing noise reduction, selecting the right environment, ensuring recording settings and dB levels are correct, setting proper recording distance, and executing proper source file naming techniques are the steps I took to create the assets I was looking for. Once the sources were selected, then it was time to start editing the assets. I would use methods such as topping/tailing the audio selection to ensure I only have the exact audio I want to implement and no extra. Layering multiple audio assets is how I was able to create unique sounds for the different game levels. Creating seamless loops is a technique I learned and used to develop the environment and complex audio designs. These assets were created to have no recognizable beginning, middle, or end. Then I would use processing techniques such as Vari-Fi, modulation, automation, pitch, and other parameter alterations to make each asset fit the desired implementation in the game. Once I created the audio sources, before exporting my files I would normalize the audio to the required dB levels, along with ensuring proper bit depth and kHz settings. Once I finished creating my audio assets, I then imported the files into the game and altered the triggers, timing, volume, and pitch of the files to align each audio asset with its implementation within the game level. Creating a sound bank was the final step of implementing the audio into the games world, and creating the demo reel you see above.

Thank you again for taking the time to visit my website, and for reading this description. Your time and support is greatly appreciated. Subscribing is the best way to stay up to date with Exploring Jade as I continue on my Audio Engineering Educational Journey to earn a Bachelors in Audio Production at Full Sail University.
